Lions Look Like They Can Finish Strong For A Change

CBS Detroit

By Larry Lage, AP Sports Writer

DETROIT (AP) – The Detroit Lions, already with more wins than they had last season, have set themselves up to make a run toward the playoffs after their bye.

“The tale of this season is not going to be written in the first half,” Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. “It is going to be written in the second half, and that is what we have to concentrate on.”

Detroit (5-3) has a favorable schedule on its side with just two remaining games — against Chicago next week, and Green Bay on Thanksgiving — against teams that currently have a winning record.

The Lions, though, are not good enough to just show up and win at Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Minnesota, or to beat Tampa Bay, Baltimore and the New York Giants at home.

“We have a lot to play for in the second half,” center Dominic Raiola…

Director Of DIA: Selling Art Tantamount To Closing Museum

CBS Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) – As Detroit continues to work through its bankruptcy, the director of the Detroit Institute of Arts released a letter this weekend weighing in on the possible sale of museum’s art collection.

In a letter titled “Will the DIA have to sell its art,” — director Graham Beal says selling their art will not only “threaten the millage proceeds which they rely on to operate the museum — but he says it would also be equivalent to shutting the museum’s doors. Detroit’s Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr has stated that the some of the art could be sold as part of the city’s bankruptcy deal Beal says the art being considered as “assets” are those that were bought by Detroit between 1922 and 1931– that’s about 3,300 pieces.

In the letter, Beal says the DIA staff has had very little contact with the Emergency Manager’s office — and calls…

First Hurdle Cleared As Mich. Senate Approves Medicaid Expansion To Low-Income Adults

CBS Detroit

LANSING (WWJ/AP) – The Republican-controlled Michigan Senate has voted to expand Medicaid to more low-income adults .

The vote clears a big hurdle for implementing a key but optional component of the federal health care law. The GOP-led House is expected to pass the legislation next week, and Republican Gov. Rick Snyder may sign it quickly.

The plan would provide Medicaid to 320,000 more low-income adults in 2014 and more down the line.

The Senate didn’t get enough votes to give the bill immediate effect, which may complicate how quickly the expansion can occur.

Michigan State AFL-CIO President Karla Swift reacted to the passage of Medicaid expansion:

Medicaid expansion is a victory for over 400,000 of Michigan’s most vulnerable families, but the way in which it was passed was plagued with political gamesmanship and months of delays. Today’s vote made it clear that the Tea Party controls some Lansing politicians,”…

Grosse Pointe Shores Councilman Charged With Domestic Violence

CBS Detroit

GROSSE POINTE SHORES (WWJ) – A Grosse Pointe Shores councilman who serves as the city’s mayor pro-tem has been charged with an alleged domestic violence assault involving his wife.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said 59-year-old Daniel Thomas Schulte was arraigned Thursday on charges of resisting and obstructing, preventing a crime report and domestic violence. He’s due back in court on Aug. 21 for a preliminary examination.

Police say around 10:22 p.m. on Wednesday, they received a 911 call from the Schultes’ home on Hampton Road. After interviewing his wife and another family member at the scene, police placed Schulte under arrest.

Authorities did not release details of the allegations.

Schulte, who was interviewed by the Detroit Free Press, denied any allegations of domestic violence, saying the charges are “overboard.”

“The only thing that happened that was of any consequence was I blocked another family member’s car from getting out of the driveway,” he said. “There…

Crews Working To Restore Power To Thousands Of Metro Detroiters

CBS Detroit

WATERFORD (WWJ)UPDATE 2:00 p.m. Sunday – DTE reports that only a few hundred customers are without power and they expect to have those customers fully powered by Sunday evening.

—————————————————————–

As of 8 a.m. Saturday, about 5,000 customers remain without power following heavy storms that moved through the region on Thursday.

The vast majority of the power outages are in Oakland County. The remaining outages are scattered throughout DTE Energy’s service area.

DTE Energy expects to restore power to over 95 percent of the affected customers by midnight Saturday.

Friday was a day of clean-up for many Oakland County residents — one of the areas hardest hit. The sounds of generators and chainsaws filled the neighborhoods of Waterford and Keego Harbor as downed trees — many which damaged power lines — littered neighborhoods.

Valenti On The NBA Draft: Dream, Nightmare, Reality

NBA Draft

CBS Detroit

By: Mike Valenti

With the NBA Draft tonight I figured I’d throw my thoughts out there and like most … get it wrong.

Last year the dream scenario happened where I actually got something right (http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2012/06/20/hopes-dreams-and-reality/) and the player was dynamite. Sadly this draft is downright awful and as murky as it gets.

I’m going to do this under the assumption Nerlens Noel, Victor Oladipo, Otto Porter are gone. If somehow one of those guys fell to 5-7 then it’s on Dumars to do everything he can do to move up.

Otherwise…

THE DREAM: Unlike last year where I put Andre Drummond in this spot, I’m not sure there is a “dream” scenario. The closest thing to that dream would be Ben McLemore. McLemore is the athletic wing the Pistons so desperately need. While he’s still young and sometimes maddeningly passive, he is exactly what the franchise needs…
